I flew into Chicago this morning. Apparently at O’hare, you have to be on platform 9 3/4 or something to be able to use Uber, lyft etc. Since this is business, I just hopped in a cab. Curious as to the price difference.
It’s a camry I wanna say 2010 give or take 5 years? Pleather seats, smells like a cab. Driver is nice.
Also, what the fuck Chicago? It’s my first visit and your traffic, I don’t like it.
I apologize if this is spaced weird or if there are errors. I can’t see the edges of the screen on my phone
EDIT: Just saw my first crack head! Licking a glazed donut like it was an ice cream cone.

Price difference? Depends.
For airport-to-downtown runs, a lot of cities regulate the fares for cabs, so they can be half as much as Uber. In most point-to-point runs, Uber is 20-30% cheaper.
I’ve had the same experience at airports. Even if I’m paying for it myself, sometimes the taxi is just easier because they get preferential treatment for lining up. A lot of airports make Uber/Lyft park remotely and wait to be called, which can be a disaster.

Yep, Ubers and Lyfts can’t use the livery stalls at O’Hare, so they often kinda just line up on the approach road then race in.
Cabs are usually more expensive and tend to be Nissans, Toyotas, those MV-1 things, and sometimes Fords.
Enjoy the traffic! :D

If you’re headed anywhere near downtown , take the train, then Uber/cab from the closest stop . Traffic on 90 is legendary.

Yep, you won’t see a big difference in cost on a trip like that. Where you save money thanks to the Uber subsidy is point-to-point. From DFW airport to my house, even Uber Select was 25% cheaper than a cab.
Oh, and Chicago traffic does suck. So does LA, NYC, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, etc.

I have to say this is one of the nicer cabs I’ve been in. It smells like a train car. Ya know? a lot of different peeps ride in it every day.
It’s a little sticky, honestly after the plane and cab Im looking forward to showering before my run and after.

Ask the cabbie’s opinion on Uber/Lyft and share it here.

Were just about to breach the Uber price with 25 mins to go...

I’ve taken cabs plenty of times, but they’ve been our weird local ones that you call up and they send a 10 passenger van to come get you. I've only taken an actual city cab once and it was just as gross as I always imagined.

If you’re impressed by chicago traffic you have definitely never visited Mexico City....

Knowing things I see! We’ve just breached the cheapest Uber at $37 and we’ve got 25 mins to go

Lol I’d rather not. I’m on a klonopin and can’t handle a discussion like that right now. I can't wait to see my colleagues lol

Yeah I have not. I’ve been is some terrible euro traffic. However they make up for that with fantastic public transit, great rural driving, and tight cars.

Was CTA an option for your trip? I found it quite convenient when I went on a business trip there.

Is that the train?
![]() 08/28/2019 at 09:09 |

Chicago’s main traffic problem is where they put the stupid lake. Totally inconvenient, it forces all development in the other directions!
Only half kidding here. It’s the more landlocked cities with terrible traffic that bug me. ATL and Dallas are good examples. Also Houston. Sprawl in every possible direction.

Traffic in European cities is insane, but you’re right about public transit options. They make cars purposely a burden in many cities so that people aren’t inclined to use them for everything .

Oh man, I blocked Houston from my mind. So many bad traffic memories there.

Mine was a classic NYC Crown Vic. I think it was the last year before Camrys and Siennas started taking over.

Since its a cab, prob brakes but being a camry not much else. Outside a little rough but cherry as far as cabs go

There are still a lot of crown vics in Philly and they are sooooo beat

It no longer suits my dietary preferences but the best restaurant in the city is Manny’s Deli .

The architecture boat tour is a really good way to see the city and it’s really interesting as well.
There’s good food all around, the pizza is good but not spectacular (I may be biased though being Sicilian who regularly gets homemade pizza) and if you like spicier food there’s a local chain called Nando’s Peri Peri Chicken that I just had for the first time that’s really good.
Walking the magnificent mile is neat and cheap (as long as you aren’t shopping).
The Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium are also really good.

As opposed to a figurative cab?

A cab? Cool. I've been in a cab exactly one time in my life (and zero for Uber type things). Like riding to lunch last year in my coworkers Grand Marquis, I couldn't shake the feeling that sitting in the backseat of panther platform felt wrong.

All the pizza! Sightseeing tours, come steal one of my motorcycles, helicopter tours, museum of science and industry, the Adler Planetarium, etc etc ... lol

Whenever I Uber to O’Hare from home it’s like $30 -50 and it’s here in a few minutes . Cheapest cab is $65 minimum and takes over an hour to arrive. The cabs are losing to Uber/Lyft big time out here.

As you probably already noticed since you watched the trains go by you while sitting in traffic on 90 , it’s an elevated line 80% of the way, so you can still get a signal and check emails and texts.

Avoid Lower Wacker Drive at all costs
![]() 08/28/2019 at 12:49 |

Can I add DC? Also, go try another country some time. Not long ago, I was in an Asian city in a hired black car, morning traffic was crazy (and normal for the area). We were sitting still on a 5 or so lane wide, one way road that had probably 7 lanes of cars packed onto it. There were quite a few times that food delivery mopeds and scooters would go zipping between the cars the wrong way through traffic. Totally crazy. It's the only place I travel for work that I don't rent a car.

Were at 30 s wacker

May the Lord save your soul, lower Wacker is a confusing maze of underground shenanigans, crackheads, noise, shitty drivers and more. It rivals even the very worst of the Florida Man and trust me I've seen both and can safely say that

M y hotel is two blocks from the office. I’ll take the train or Uber back to the airport. Anywhere I go while I’m here Im walking/ running
